NEOS Criticizes FPÖ for Aligning with Hungary's Political Approach

Thu 4th Dec, 2025

The Austrian political party NEOS has raised concerns over the Freedom Party of Austria's (FPÖ) recent demonstrations of support for Hungary's political direction under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. NEOS representatives argue that Hungary's governance model, which has increasingly embraced authoritarian tendencies, should not be seen as a template for Austria or the broader European Union.

During a press conference that featured FPÖ General Secretary Christian Hafenecker and Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, NEOS responded to what it identifies as an ongoing pattern of FPÖ favoring Hungary's policies. The NEOS delegation in the European Parliament contends that admiration for Hungary's approach signifies a departure from core European responsibilities and values.

According to NEOS, Hungary's current trajectory has resulted in political and economic isolation within the EU. The party emphasizes that policies emphasizing national sovereignty, when paired with increased dependency on Russian energy, undermine both domestic and European stability. NEOS also highlights the adverse effects of Hungary's political decisions, including stagnation in economic growth, challenges to democratic institutions, and declining standards in public services such as healthcare.

NEOS expresses particular concern that Austria, by adopting similar policies or alliances, could face comparable risks, including reduced diplomatic influence, economic setbacks, and diminished commitment to democratic norms. The party stresses the importance of prioritizing European integration, democratic governance, rule of law, and sustainable, independent energy strategies as essential for Austria's future.

Furthermore, NEOS disputes claims made by Hungary's foreign minister suggesting that the EU is undermining democratic standards to disadvantage right-leaning parties. The party maintains that political outcomes in Austria are determined by domestic political processes and leadership decisions, not by external forces or undemocratic interventions.

In summary, NEOS reiterates its stance that Hungary's current political and economic model should be viewed as a cautionary example rather than a path for Austria to follow. The party calls for Austria to reaffirm its commitment to European values, democratic principles, and economic independence to ensure long-term prosperity and stability.
