Massive Flooding in Australia Affects Area the Size of France

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

In Queensland, Australia, extensive flooding has engulfed an area comparable to the size of France, primarily impacting regions known for livestock farming. Recent reports indicate that over 100,000 farm animals have either drowned or been swept away by the rising waters. Authorities predict that this figure may continue to escalate.

The catastrophic flooding followed an unprecedented week of heavy rainfall that caused rivers to overflow in this typically arid eastern state. The inundation has spread across approximately 500,000 square kilometers. According to AgForce, an agricultural advocacy group, some farms may have lost nearly their entire livestock populations.

As the situation evolves, meteorologists are cautioning residents about the possibility of further rainfall. Multiple flood alerts are currently in effect across vast regions of Queensland, as stated by meteorologist Dean Narramore. Last week, some cities recorded rainfall amounts equivalent to what is usually expected over an entire year, further compounding the crisis.

Experts are attributing the increasing frequency and severity of such extreme weather events to ongoing global climate change, raising concerns about the future of agriculture and livestock management in the region.
