Starting December 14, 2025, the train services in Lower Austria will see significant improvements, aimed at enhancing the daily commuting experience. The initiative, announced by the Vice Governor of Lower Austria, highlights the introduction of new routes, additional stops, and modern double-decker trains that offer considerably more seating capacity. The focus is on strengthening the rail transport system in this key commuter region, catering to the needs of daily travelers.
One of the key upgrades includes the expansion of the CJX9 rapid connection in the southern part of the province, which will feature extra early morning and late-night services. This enhancement will extend the half-hourly service during peak traveling hours between Wiener Neustadt, Vienna, and Payerbach-Reichenau. Furthermore, the first early train will now run directly to Vienna's main station, with two additional connections in the early morning and just after midnight to bolster the Vienna-Wiener Neustadt corridor.
Christof Hermann, Regional Manager at ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG, stated that these changes will provide tangible benefits for passengers in Lower Austria. The introduction of new connections, additional stops, and the deployment of modern double-decker trains over the coming year are all part of a strategy to make local train travel more appealing and comfortable. The aim is to collaborate with the state to establish a reliable and forward-looking rail service that meets the expectations of commuters.
Improvements will also be made on regional routes around Wiener Neustadt, with early services on the R92 now commencing from Friedberg, thus accelerating access to Vienna. A new direct connection, dubbed the Burgenlandsprinter (REX93), will operate on weekdays from Vienna through Wiener Neustadt to Deutschkreutz. Additionally, a bus replacement service is set to be introduced on the Mattersburg line in 2026 as part of ongoing modernization efforts.
Another significant change involves the S-Bahn lines S3 and S4, which will now consistently stop in Theresienfeld, offering a crucial enhancement for numerous working commuters. Weekend express trains to Gutenstein and Puchberg will also have new schedules and additional stops in Mödling and Baden.
On the western axis and the Franz-Josefs-Bahn, the upcoming schedule change will bring further improvements. Two extra weekend services will be added on the CJX5/R58 line between Vienna West Station and Selzthal, particularly benefiting leisure travelers. Existing R58 connections will be adjusted to enhance evening service in the Ybbstal region and expand weekend offerings. Commuters in Gemeinlebarn and Sitzenberg-Reidling will see new stops on the S40 line, while the departure times for the REX50 from Vienna West Station will be optimized for afternoon commuters.
Following the completion of barrier-free upgrades, all trains on the Kamptalbahn will once again stop in Kamegg. New late-night connections will allow for returns from Vienna to Horn even on weekends and holidays, improving accessibility for rural areas. Additionally, there will be extra barrier-free trains on the Kamptalbahn line from Horn through Hadersdorf and Krems to St. Pölten on weekends. Early trains from Horn to Krems will also be adjusted to better accommodate school schedules.
A pivotal advancement for the future of rail transport in Lower Austria will occur with the launch of new Cityjet double-decker trains in spring 2026. These modern trains will feature significantly enhanced seating capacity, with up to eight carriages, increased comfort, free Wi-Fi, and video surveillance, replacing the older Wiesel units. These double-decker trains will be utilized primarily on fast local routes through the Northwest, North, and South rail lines to Wiener Neustadt and Payerbach-Reichenau.
With these investments in state-of-the-art trains and infrastructure, the goal is to provide more space, safety, and comfort for residents. This represents a substantial quality leap for the railway network in Lower Austria. The authorities are committed to ensuring that every additional service, every new stop, and every improved connection enhances the quality of life and offers planning reliability for the community. It is essential that the new services operate punctually and maintain the expected quality for commuters.
