Jannik Sinner Reflects on Doping Suspension Experience

Sun 6th Apr, 2025

Jannik Sinner, the top-ranked player in tennis, has expressed his feelings regarding his recent doping suspension, which he considers to be unfair. The Italian athlete, who is counting down the days until the suspension ends next month, opened up about the emotional toll it has taken on him. In an interview with Sky Sport Italia, Sinner described his initial feelings of vulnerability following the announcement of his suspension in Doha.

He acknowledged the difficulties he faced during this period but credited the support of those around him for helping him regain his strength. Despite the hardships, Sinner emphasized that he has learned valuable lessons from the experience. He noted that while he was not entirely in agreement with the terms of the suspension, he had to make a choice that he viewed as the lesser of two evils, acknowledging the potential for an even harsher outcome.

Sinner was tested positive for the banned substance Clostebol in March 2024. He claimed that the substance entered his system unintentionally during a massage administered by his coach. The International Tennis Integrity Agency determined that there was no intentional wrongdoing, leading to no suspension initially. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) contested this decision, resulting in a three-month suspension agreement between Sinner and WADA.

The decision sparked criticism from fellow players in the sport. Sinner described feeling particularly fragile at the start of his suspension, emphasizing that he is a person with emotions. He expressed awareness of the negative comments made about him but reaffirmed his innocence, acknowledging the emotional challenges he faced during this time.

As he prepares for his return to the ATP Tour in Rome following the end of his suspension in early May, Sinner admitted that he has been counting the days since the suspension began. Over the past few weeks, he has focused less on watching tennis and more on utilizing the break to enhance his skills, particularly on surfaces that have posed challenges for him in the past. He feels that he is improving both physically and mentally every day.

Having won the last two Australian Open titles, Sinner is eager to return to competitive play and show the progress he has made during his time away from the sport.
