Invasive Japanese Beetle Detected in Tyrol

Tue 30th Sep, 2025

The national reference laboratory of the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) has confirmed the presence of the Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) in Tyrol. This beetle, originally from Japan, is subject to specific control measures within the European Union (EU) due to its potential for significant damage.

The invasive species has been known to cause extensive harm by feeding on the leaves, flowers, and fruits of a variety of ornamental and agricultural plants. Additionally, the larvae, commonly referred to as grubs, can damage the roots of grass, corn, vegetables, and other crops while subsisting in the soil. The type of damage inflicted is comparable to that caused by other pests such as the cockchafer or the garden chafer.

The confirmation of this pest's presence raises concerns among agricultural and ecological experts, as it could lead to substantial economic impacts in the region. Farmers and gardeners are advised to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the beetle to local authorities to mitigate the potential spread of this invasive species.

Control measures will likely be implemented to manage the population of the Japanese beetle and protect local ecosystems. These strategies may include public awareness campaigns, targeted pesticide applications, and monitoring programs to track the spread of the beetle.
