Humanoid Robots Compete Against Humans in Beijing Half Marathon

Sat 19th Apr, 2025

In a remarkable demonstration of technological advancement, several humanoid robots participated in a half marathon in Beijing, pitting their capabilities against human runners. The event unfolded over a distance of 21.0975 kilometers through the Yizhuang district, attracting significant attention from both the public and media.

The robot 'Tiangong' emerged as the first robot to cross the finish line, completing the race in 2 hours, 40 minutes, and 24 seconds. This result placed it well behind the fastest human competitor, who finished with an impressive time of 1 hour, 11 minutes, and 7 seconds. Following Tiangong, another robot completed the race nearly an hour later.

Organized by a coalition of 20 companies and research institutions, the event required participating robots to adhere to specific criteria, such as possessing two legs. Not all robots performed flawlessly; some were unable to begin the race, as evidenced by footage aired on Chinese state television. More than 10,000 human runners registered for the event, highlighting the growing popularity of such competitions.

A unique aspect of this race was the separation of the running paths for humans and robots, which were clearly marked by barriers. Additionally, engineers were allowed to make adjustments to their robots during the race, emphasizing the event's focus on technological demonstration rather than competition for top honors. No robot was expected to pose a serious challenge to the human runners in terms of winning.

The Chinese government has expressed a commitment to advancing artificial intelligence and robotics this year, aiming to foster innovation in these fields. The event served as both a showcase of current robotic capabilities and a stepping stone toward future developments in technology.
