Grocery Prices Stabilize Amid Intensified Competition

Thu 3rd Apr, 2025

In January and February, grocery prices experienced a significant rise. However, data from Matpriskollen indicates that the increase has slowed to just 0.1 percent in March.

Ulf Mazur, CEO and founder of Matpriskollen, attributes this shift to growing pressure from consumers, prompting major retailers like Ica to take action to avoid losing sales volume. This, in turn, has forced competitors such as Willys and Lidl to lower their prices.

According to Mazur, the transition from announced price increases by producers to new prices displayed in stores can take several months. Many adjustments typically occur during January and February. Willys, known for its quick price adjustments, often implements these centrally with a simple button press, while Ica usually lags behind. However, recent developments suggest a change in this trend.

When Ica delays its price changes, Willys must respond by reducing prices to maintain its promise of offering the lowest grocery prices. This competitive dynamic has intensified as retailers vie for customer loyalty.

Matpriskollen notes that the pricing trends observed in March are correlated with evolving consumer purchasing behaviors and heightened competition among retailers. As prices have escalated, consumers have diversified their shopping habits, frequenting multiple stores more than before. This shift poses challenges for Ica, which now needs to devise strategies to address these changes.

Consequently, retailers are exercising more caution in their pricing strategies. They are also engaging in promotional campaigns, discounts, and multi-price offerings to sustain sales volumes.

Looking ahead, there is speculation that other retailers will adapt to these market changes, but predicting the future trajectory of pricing remains uncertain.

Despite the slower-than-expected price increase in March, Matpriskollen identifies meat as a standout category where demand continues to outpace supply. Consumers are showing renewed interest in meat products following a prolonged trend toward vegetarianism. Additionally, dairy farmers are receiving favorable prices for milk, leading to a delay in the slaughter of older dairy cattle.

On the other hand, price reductions are particularly evident in the fruit and vegetable sector, which aligns with seasonal trends, as well as in olive oil, which has also become more affordable.
