Greens Propose Urban Revitalization for Hernals: 1,000 Trees and a River

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

In a bid to enhance the livability of the heavily trafficked Hernals district, local Greens are advocating for a significant transformation of the Hernalser Hauptstraße into a green urban boulevard and the re-emergence of the Alsbach river. A recent study commissioned by the Greens outlines a comprehensive plan aimed at revitalizing this concrete-heavy area.

The proposed changes are intended to alleviate the current burdens faced by residents and businesses due to high traffic volumes, particularly from heavy vehicles. The initiative envisions a vibrant public space, where families can enjoy nature and community activities.

The study suggests a major redesign of the Hernalser Hauptstraße, which serves as a primary route for commuters traveling from the Vienna Woods to the city center. The area currently suffers from a lack of greenery and shade, with the Elterleinplatz identified as a significant heat hotspot. The Greens' proposal aims to reshape the street into a climate-friendly, safe, and attractive thoroughfare that prioritizes pedestrian and cyclist experiences.

Key elements of the proposal include:

  • Reducing through traffic, particularly heavy vehicles, to enhance safety and comfort for all users.
  • Planting two new rows of trees and creating additional green spaces to provide shade and improve the local microclimate.
  • Widening sidewalks and establishing car-free zones to encourage social interaction and relaxation.
  • Implementing continuous and secure bike lanes to promote cycling.
  • Increasing pedestrian crossing opportunities with wider and more accessible intersections.
  • Improving tram services with green tracks and upgraded stops to minimize disruptions caused by road traffic.
  • Redesigning side streets to create inviting public spaces, parks, and recreational areas.
  • Planting 1,000 trees based on a sponge city model to combat heat islands and enhance urban biodiversity.

In addition to these changes, the Greens propose restoring the Alsbach river, which has been concealed since the 19th century. By bringing the river to the surface, the initiative aims to utilize its natural water flow to cool the surrounding area and enhance the urban climate. The Alsbach's year-round water presence makes it an ideal candidate for this project.

The proposed alterations include:

  • Creating an open waterway along the Rötzergasse, equipped with seating steps and landscaping to foster an inviting atmosphere.
  • Establishing a new Alsbach park that offers green and consumption-free relaxation spaces within the densely built environment.
  • Enhancing the overall appeal for local businesses and residents, contributing to a more attractive neighborhood.

This initiative is seen as a unique opportunity for sustainable urban development, especially in light of ongoing construction for the U5 metro line, which presents a pivotal moment to rethink Hernals' infrastructure. By prioritizing green spaces and community-oriented designs, the Greens aim to transform Hernals into a cooler, more livable urban oasis for all who live, work, or visit the area.
