French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Egypt, landing in the capital city of Cairo on Sunday evening, as confirmed by the Élysée Palace. Following his arrival, Macron is scheduled to receive a private tour of the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is set to officially open on July 3 after over two decades of planning and construction.
On Monday morning, Macron will meet with Egyptian President Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo. This meeting is part of a broader initiative aimed at addressing ongoing tensions in the region.
A significant aspect of Macron's visit will be a trilateral summit with King Abdullah II of Jordan, focusing on the ongoing Gaza conflict. The discussions in Cairo are expected to center on efforts to establish a new ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military has intensified its airstrikes against Hamas targets in Gaza since mid-March, resuming operations that had been paused since a temporary ceasefire that began in January.
The negotiations regarding the continuation of this ceasefire have yet to yield any results. Egypt is playing a crucial role as a mediator in the indirect talks between Israel and Hamas.
On Tuesday, Macron plans to travel to El Arish, a city near the Gaza Strip. There, he intends to meet with humanitarian workers, reinforcing his support for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. El Arish, located approximately 50 kilometers from the Gaza border, serves as a vital transit point for aid deliveries into the Palestinian territories.
As the international community watches closely, Macron's visit underscores the urgency of diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation in Gaza and promote humanitarian assistance to those affected by the ongoing conflict.
