Fladnitztaler Woman Faces Trial for Stealing EUR30,000 from Friend

A woman from Fladnitztal is currently on trial at the St. Pölten regional court, facing serious charges after allegedly stealing EUR30,000 from a close friend. The 45-year-old defendant, who previously had no criminal record, has been struggling with both physical health issues and psychological problems.

The incident unfolded last year when the woman visited her friend, who had briefly stepped out of the house to pick up her son from a bus stop. During this brief absence, the accused reportedly seized the opportunity to steal the significant sum of cash that was stored in a locked cash box. The stolen money was intended for flood relief efforts. The defendant expressed her confusion about her actions, stating that it was an impulsive mistake for which she has no clear explanation.

In addition to the theft of the large sum, the woman has also been charged with two instances of shoplifting. In one incident at a Unimarkt in Wölbling, she attempted to purchase several items but was caught concealing additional products--three pairs of socks, garlic granules, and Brussels sprouts--hidden in a bag attached to her shopping cart. A similar tactic was employed during another theft at a Bipa store in Herzogenburg, where she stole a bottle of perfume.

Despite her actions, the accused has returned the stolen EUR30,000 and voluntarily admitted herself to a psychiatric facility at the Landesklinikum Mauer for treatment. The presiding judge has yet to render a verdict in this case, noting that the unusual behavior exhibited by the defendant may be linked to recent changes in her medication. A psychiatric expert will further evaluate her condition, and the trial has been adjourned pending these findings.
