In a significant escalation of hostilities, a Russian drone strike in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine, resulted in the deaths of at least two civilians, a 67-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman, during the early hours of Sunday. The attack also left 25 others injured, including five children ranging from ages 5 to 17, with a 15-year-old girl reported to be in critical condition, according to Ukrainian officials.
Explosions reverberated throughout the city late Saturday night as Russian drones targeted multiple sites, including a shopping center, residential buildings, and an office complex. Additionally, a military hospital was struck, leading to injuries among soldiers receiving treatment there. Ukrainian authorities have accused Russia of committing war crimes due to the attack on the hospital.
The previous day, a separate Russian drone assault on Dnipro led to at least four fatalities and approximately 20 injuries, including that of a pregnant woman, as confirmed by Ukrainian sources.
Despite the interception of many drones, several residential structures were still hit, resulting in significant damage, including a fire at a popular hotel restaurant shaped like a wooden boat along the river, as reported by various news outlets.
After the drone assault in Dnipro, a 60-year-old local resident expressed his devastation, remarking on the destruction of his neighborhood and attributing the ongoing violence to negotiations with Russia. He emphasized the reality that civilians would continue to be targeted.
In addition to the attacks in Dnipro and Kharkiv, Sumy also faced drone strikes, as over 170 drones were launched across eastern Ukraine. Furthermore, a missile strike impacted Kryvyj Rih, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hometown, resulting in injuries to several individuals.
In a recent announcement, the White House disclosed that agreements had been reached between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia to halt hostilities in the Black Sea and to devise strategies to protect each nation's energy infrastructures. However, both parties have since accused one another of violating these agreements.
In a speech late Saturday, President Zelenskyy urged allied nations, particularly the U.S. and European countries, to respond firmly to Russia's continuing drone assaults, which have become a daily occurrence. He highlighted the broad nature of these attacks, noting that they target not only civilians but also undermine international diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict.
Zelenskyy has warned that Russia appears to be preparing for a renewed spring offensive, aiming to strengthen its position in ongoing negotiations. According to the president, Russia is allegedly stalling talks by imposing unrealistic demands to gain more territory.
This latest surge in violence underscores the precarious and volatile situation in Ukraine as the conflict continues to escalate, impacting both military and civilian lives across the region.
