Espelkamp. A 14-year-old girl died in Espelkamp, Lower Saxony when the car she was travelling in driven by her grandmother collided with a local train.
The accident happened at a railroad crossing and it is still unclear why the 71-year-old grandmother drove through the crossing that had been blocked by security guards and police tape. Due to the collision, the car flipped over and landed upside down. The girl died at the accident scene, reported a police spokesman in Minden. Her grandmother and 79-year-old grandfather were seriously injured and taken to hospital.
The 18 passengers on the train were unhurt and resumed their journey with taxis. The train line was closed for several hours and buses were then used stated the Deutsche Bahn in Hanover. It is assumed that the 71-year-old had overlooked the temporary barriers due to bad weather and poor lighting.
