The prestigious Cannes Film Festival will showcase an impressive lineup this year, featuring numerous acclaimed directors and a notable performance by Austrian actress Susanne Wuest. Although no Austrian films are currently competing for the coveted Palme d'Or, Wuest stars in the German film In die Sonne schauen, directed by Mascha Schilinski, which is among the 19 films vying for the award from May 13 to 24.
Thierry Frémaux, the festival's artistic director, announced a record-breaking 2,909 feature films had been submitted for consideration this year, with 32% directed by women and 68% by male filmmakers. Frémaux expressed optimism about the vitality of cinema, emphasizing that the films presented reflect the contemporary world.
This year's competition honors the legacies of legendary artists such as David Lynch and Alain Delon. Notable directors in the official lineup include Joachim Trier with Sentimental Value and the Dardenne brothers with Jeunes mères. Julia Ducournau, a previous Palme d'Or winner for Titane, returns with her new film Alpha. Richard Linklater, shortly after his appearance at the Berlinale, presents Nouvelle Vague, which explores the making of Jean-Luc Godard's classic A bout de souffle.
Alongside Wuest's film, Fatih Akin's Amrum will feature in the secondary section Un Certain Regard. Wes Anderson also contributes to the competition with his new film Der Phönizische Meisterstreich, which stars Scarlett Johansson and other well-known actors. Additionally, Ari Aster's Western film Eddington featuring Joaquin Phoenix will make its debut.
Hollywood star Tom Cruise is set to return to Cannes with what may be the final chapter of the Mission: Impossible series, following his previous success with Top Gun: Maverick. The festival will also showcase the new documentary Stories of Surrender centered on the musician Bono.
In a celebrated moment, the renowned actor Robert De Niro will receive the Golden Honorary Palme d'Or for his lifetime achievements in cinema. De Niro, a two-time Oscar winner, is known for his iconic roles in films such as Taxi Driver, Casino, and Raging Bull.
Juliette Binoche, a prominent French actress, will preside over the jury at this year's festival, taking over the role from American director Greta Gerwig, marking a significant moment as it is only the second time a woman has passed the position to another female.
