Call for 2,000 Easter Baskets: Austria Launches Major Animal Welfare Initiative

Sun 30th Mar, 2025

As Easter approaches, over 2,000 animals at the Vösendorf Animal Shelter are facing yet another holiday without a permanent home or family. The Easter Basket Initiative, organized by Tierschutz Austria, has evolved from a small idea five years ago into Austria's largest fundraising campaign for homeless animals, now entering its fifth year.

During this festive season, many animals will spend their time in the shelter rather than in loving homes. For instance, Mawish, an American Staffordshire Terrier, and Baron, a black cat, have both celebrated multiple Easters at the shelter, still waiting for families to adopt them. The goal of this initiative is to provide these animals with a sense of hope and care.

The Easter Basket Initiative encourages animal lovers to contribute by donating funds instead of traditional Easter treats like colorful eggs or chocolate bunnies. These donations will directly support essential needs such as food, medical care, and enrichment activities for the animals. In appreciation of the generosity shown, contributors will receive a special animal-themed Easter song as a token of gratitude.

Those wishing to participate can do so until Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, offering a chance to bring joy to the lives of shelter animals and show them they are not forgotten.

The campaign highlights the dedication of the shelter staff, who provide daily care, medical treatment, and affection to the animals. Their commitment is vital in ensuring that the animals live with dignity and love until they find their forever homes.
