Thu 20th Mar, 2025

Authorities in Tirol are investigating a potential arson case following a barn fire at a farm in Fügen, located in the Zillertal Valley. The incident, which occurred on a Tuesday afternoon, has led to the arrest of a 33-year-old German national who is suspected of having started the fire.

According to police reports, the suspect was apprehended in Zell am Ziller on Tuesday evening, where he was found with clothing that had been burned. Further investigations and witness interviews have strengthened the suspicions against him, as he was reportedly present near the farm at the time the fire broke out. However, details regarding the motive for the alleged arson have not yet been disclosed.

The suspect has been taken into custody and is now being held at the Innsbruck correctional facility. Investigative efforts are ongoing, with authorities leaning toward the conclusion that the fire resulted from external causes rather than accidental circumstances.

The barn fire resulted in injuries to two men, identified as the property owners, who sustained minor injuries and were subsequently transported to Schwaz Hospital for medical evaluation. Tragically, several animals perished in the blaze, including sheep and smaller livestock, although the exact number has not been officially confirmed. The wooden structure of the barn was completely destroyed in the fire.

Over 70 firefighters from Fügen and neighboring communities worked for approximately five hours to bring the fire under control. Prompt action was taken by the farm owner and bystanders who noticed the flames, initiating a rescue operation before the fire crews arrived. Fortunately, they managed to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby residential building.

This incident has raised concerns regarding fire safety and the potential criminal activity surrounding such fires in rural areas. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
