The Austrian Minister of Agriculture has issued a warning regarding a heightened risk of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) during the Easter holiday period. The minister noted that the chances of the disease being introduced into Austria are particularly high around this time of year due to various factors.
Increased travel activity linked to holiday celebrations, as well as the return of individuals from affected regions, contribute to this risk. Additionally, the presence of Easter markets featuring products of unknown origin can further exacerbate the situation. The minister urged the public to exercise caution and adhere to strict hygiene measures to prevent the disease's spread.
Travelers returning from regions where FMD is prevalent are advised against bringing back fresh meat, raw milk, or animal feed from these areas. The minister highlighted that individuals who come into contact with animals while traveling could unintentionally contribute to the transmission of foot-and-mouth disease.
As of the latest reports, no cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been recorded in Austria. In a related discussion, the minister expressed optimism about the development of a national climate law, which is expected to be presented in the coming months. He indicated that extensive discussions have been held with various political parties regarding the potential contents of the legislation.
The minister mentioned that they have examined various models, such as the climate protection law in Vienna and the German climate protection framework, to inform their approach. He emphasized the importance of establishing clear guidelines for inter-ministerial cooperation on climate initiatives, as climate change impacts multiple sectors, including transportation, energy, and finance.
A scientific advisory board is also to be established as part of the legislative process, along with mechanisms for public engagement. Furthermore, the minister is tasked with submitting a plan to the European Commission for implementing the EU Restoration Law by mid-2026. This law, initially supported by a former environment minister against the wishes of the ruling party, has prompted critical responses from the current minister.
The minister acknowledged the existence of numerous exemplary projects in Austria but criticized the top-down approach of the EU mandate. He conveyed that a framework for developing the plan in collaboration with federal states has been set up, alongside the formation of necessary working groups. However, he noted that essential information from Brussels is still pending.
Another pressing matter is the need for new legislation regarding the transitional period related to the ban on slatted floors in pig farming, which must be addressed by the end of May 2025. Failure to enact a new regulation by this date will result in the ban coming into effect on June 1. The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to establishing a practical solution, given the significant role of pork production in the agricultural sector.
In light of these developments, the minister expressed confidence that Austrian consumers would continue to have access to both conventionally produced and organic pork, in line with market demand. Lastly, regarding the Lobau Tunnel project, which had been halted due to environmental assessments by the former environment minister, the current minister appears relaxed about the potential resumption of construction. He reiterated the government's commitment to advancing all approved infrastructure projects promptly to bolster economic growth and reduce traffic congestion.
