World Health Day: Coalition Parties Commit to Strengthening Public Health System

Sun 6th Apr, 2025

In recognition of World Health Day, observed annually on April 7 to commemorate the establishment of the World Health Organization (WHO) and to raise awareness about significant health issues, the health spokespersons from Austria's coalition parties have emphasized the importance of a robust public health system for all citizens. The representatives, including Juliane Bogner-Strauß from the ÖVP, Fiona Fiedler from NEOS, and Rudolf Silvan from the SPÖ, are united in their commitment to enhancing health services across the nation.

As part of their initiative, the coalition plans to conduct an extensive assessment of the current health system as a precursor to implementing specific reforms. The health spokespersons have shared preliminary insights into key areas outlined in the government program, focusing particularly on women's health.

Recognizing the right to comprehensive medical care for women throughout their lives, Bogner-Strauß highlighted that the government is prioritizing women's health. Measures will include increased resources for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of female-specific health issues, the establishment of multidisciplinary health centers for women, and targeted research on women's health. The aim is to ensure that health remains a focal point in the quest for gender equality.

Furthermore, Fiedler stressed the importance of health education starting from a young age, particularly in schools. By promoting health literacy among children and adolescents, the coalition aims to foster a proactive approach to personal health management. This initiative not only seeks to improve the overall health of the population but also aims to increase the number of healthy years that Austrians experience.

Silvan, who has returned to a role in government after years in opposition, expressed optimism about collaborating to eliminate the disparities in medical access known as 'two-tiered medicine.' He emphasized the need for essential services to be accessible to all citizens via the e-Card system rather than requiring upfront payment. He also highlighted the potential role of artificial intelligence and digital health solutions in improving patient navigation through the healthcare system.

The coalition leaders acknowledge the existing challenges within the healthcare sector and are committed to working together to find sustainable solutions. They concluded by expressing gratitude to the dedicated professionals in the health sector for their invaluable contributions.
