Wholesale Electricity and Gas Prices Rise in July 2025

In July 2025, the short-term wholesale price indices for electricity and gas experienced a notable increase, reflecting ongoing trends in the energy market.

According to the latest data, the monthly electricity price index (ÖSPIMonat) rose by 8.8% compared to the previous month, reaching a value of EUR78.19 per megawatt-hour (MWh). When compared to July 2024, this represents a 6.6% increase. Additionally, the peak load price is currently 20.5% lower than the base load price.

On a quarterly basis, the electricity price index (ÖSPIQuartal) also saw an increase of 8.5% for the third quarter of 2025 compared to the previous quarter, with a 9.1% rise year-on-year, setting the index at EUR84.57 per MWh. The peak load price for this quarter is 10.1% lower than the base load price.

In contrast, the annual electricity price index (ÖSPIJahr) experienced a slight decrease of 1.0% from April 2025, although it remains 12.0% higher than in July 2024, with the current index value at EUR99.34 per MWh. The peak load price is 8.7% higher than the base load price for this annual index.

Turning to gas prices, the monthly gas price index (ÖGPIMonat) has risen by 7.9% from the previous month, now standing at EUR40.98 per MWh. This figure also reflects a significant increase of 15.18% compared to July 2024.

On a quarterly basis, the gas price index (ÖGPIQuartal) fell by 19.8% in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the previous quarter, but it remains 17.4% higher than the same quarter in 2024, with the current value at EUR39.01 per MWh.

For the annual perspective, the gas price index (ÖGPIJahr) decreased by 7.0% from April 2025, yet it is still 22.9% higher than the value recorded in July 2024, with an index value of EUR41.88 per MWh.
