About Schillertheater

Without Schillertheater, there is no Komische Oper Berlin! Opened in 1907, the Schillertheater became the second venue of the Prussian State Theatre Berlin in 1921. Walter Felsenstein directed here in the 1930s under Intendant Heinrich George. Destroyed by bombs in 1944, the artists of the Schillertheater continued their work at the Hebbel-Theater. There, Felsenstein's legendary production of Jacques Offenbach's 'Pariser Leben' was created – a production that earned him the directorship of the former Metropol-Theater in Behrenstraße. Here he founded the house that is considered the cradle of modern musical theatre – the Komische Oper Berlin. The Schillertheater was rebuilt after the war in 1950/51 and has served as a venue for the Komische Oper Berlin since the 2023/24 season.
