The history of the current restaurant 'Der Eiserne Gustav' dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. At that time, the Köppen family built the inn at the corner of Gravensteinstraße and Hauptstraße. Traveling merchants and large harvest festivals ensured the constant operation of the tavern. From 1895 to 1904, the inn served as a bus depot during the night for rest breaks. After a barn fire, the inn and guesthouse gradually fell into disrepair. Seven years later, Gustav Matthieu took over the dilapidated inn and revived the small establishment with the dance hall. Complemented by a beer garden, the inn had the typical Berlin Zille flair. At that time, the inn was named 'Jägerheim' and served Löwen Böhmisch and Berliner Kindl. The large regulars' table attracted many notable Buchholzer, tradespeople, and the riding club for Sunday brunch. The highlight of the house's history was in 1958 when several trucks from a well-known film company arrived, using the restaurant and church as a backdrop for the film 'Der eiserne Gustav.' Buchholzer Görsch, Schmelz, and members of the school choir served as extras, and vegetable farmers provided carriages with horses for the film shoots as props. The lead role in the film was played by the famous actor Heinz Rühmann, who spent his breaks in the restaurant's kitchen with peppermint tea and white cheese. Today, we narrate the culinary journey of the Iron Gustav (Gustav Hartmann) from Berlin to Paris and wish you a pleasant stay in our restaurant.
