The Unga Operan has unveiled its latest spring production, an adaptation of George Frideric Handel's baroque opera 'Julius Caesar', which promises excitement and accessibility for young audiences. This opera, originally set against the backdrop of a civil war in ancient Egypt, has been tailored to resonate with schoolchildren, particularly those in the upper elementary grades.

With a runtime of just 60 minutes, the performance has been crafted to maintain the attention of younger viewers while providing a dynamic retelling of the classic tale. The premiere was attended by a lively group of fourth graders from Sätra, whose enthusiastic response suggests that this adaptation is well-suited for its target demographic.

In this rendition, the character of Sesto is portrayed as a misfit who struggles for acceptance among his peers, Tolomeo and Akillas. The narrative is infused with humor and intrigue, as Sesto's father's severed head transforms into a symbolic ball, representing the high stakes of revenge that drive the plot forward. Cleopatra, portrayed by Sofie Asplund, emerges as a powerful figure in this reimagining, captivating the audience with her vocal prowess and commanding stage presence.

The direction by Clara Svärd brings a physicality to the performance that enhances the storytelling, while Magdalena Åberg's innovative set design features an oversized tennis umpire's chair, cleverly serving dual purposes as both a throne and a prison within the action-packed scenes. The visual elements, combined with energetic choreography, create a vibrant atmosphere that engages the young audience.

Musically, the performance features a talented ensemble drawn from the Kungliga Hovkapellet, with conductor Mattias Böhm leading a spirited interpretation of Handel's score. The orchestration has been artfully condensed by Jonas Dominique, allowing the essential elements of the music to shine while making it accessible to young ears. Although some notable solos have been adapted, the overall musical experience remains authentic and enjoyable.

As the plot unfolds, Sesto's internal conflict culminates in a moment of violence that incites a strong reaction from the audience, emphasizing the emotional weight of the narrative. The adaptation successfully balances light-hearted moments with serious themes, making it a compelling experience for families.

The production runs for a total of 44 performances, indicating a strong commitment to bringing opera to younger audiences. The creative team behind this project has demonstrated a clear understanding of how to present classical works in a format that resonates with today's youth, ensuring that the legacy of opera continues to thrive in a new generation.
