TÜV AUSTRIA Unveils State-of-the-Art Acoustic Testing Track in Germany

Tue 29th Apr, 2025

In a significant advancement for the automotive industry, TÜV AUSTRIA has inaugurated Europe's most advanced vehicle acoustic testing track in Bad Sobernheim, located in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. This modern facility represents a major expansion of TÜV AUSTRIA's automotive solutions portfolio, positioning the company as a reliable partner for car manufacturers and suppliers across Europe.

The new testing track, which commenced operations on April 28, 2025, is built on the site of a former NATO airfield and spans 600 meters. It is designed to accommodate a variety of tests, including outdoor noise type testing for motorcycles and vehicles in accordance with regulations such as UN-ECE R41, UN-ECE R51, and UN-ECE R138, among others. The facility also allows for measurements related to conformity of production (COP) and testing of aftermarket mufflers according to UN-ECE R59 and UN-ECE R92. Additionally, tire rolling noise tests can be conducted in line with UN-ECE R117 standards.

The testing track's layout is optimized for efficiency, allowing for necessary testing speeds even with larger vehicles like trucks and providing adequate turning loops for shorter vehicles. This design enhances throughput while minimizing test cycle times. Notably, tests can be conducted with a single operator, reducing the need for additional personnel at the control station, which further streamlines operations and lowers costs.

Another notable feature of the facility is its low ambient noise levels, which ensure that tests involving electric vehicles can be performed without interference from external sounds. This capability is crucial as the automotive industry increasingly shifts towards electric mobility.

With the infrastructure in place, including pre-installed measurement lines and a user-friendly control room, TÜV AUSTRIA has implemented a 'plug & measure' approach, allowing clients to start testing quickly and efficiently, thereby reducing setup time and costs.

TÜV AUSTRIA's CEO emphasized the importance of this cutting-edge acoustic testing facility in augmenting the company's offerings to the automotive sector in Germany and throughout Europe. The strategic location of the track enhances its appeal, especially with several well-known tire manufacturers located nearby at the TRIWO Automotive Testing Center, creating opportunities for collaborative testing and development.

Founded in 1872 in Vienna, TÜV AUSTRIA is a leading inspection, certification, and training organization operating globally, with nearly 3,800 employees across more than 100 locations in 36 countries. The company is recognized for its commitment to quality and independence in various domains, including automotive safety, IT security, and sustainability.
