As Austria prepares to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Second Republic, the leader of the Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ), Andreas Babler, reflects on the significance of this milestone. The Second Republic was officially established on April 27, 1945, following the signing of the Austrian Independence Declaration and the formation of a provisional government led by Dr. Karl Renner.

Babler emphasizes that the Second Republic emerged from the devastation of World War II, representing a commitment to peace, freedom, equality, and prosperity for all citizens. He urges the importance of prioritizing unity over division, advocating for a fair society and social balance, and reinforcing the foundations of democracy.

The SPÖ leader acknowledges the collective effort required for the establishment of the Republic and the subsequent reconstruction of Austria after the atrocities of the Nazi regime. He notes that the democratic consensus and social cohesion have been pivotal in making Austria strong and successful over the past eight decades, highlighting these virtues as defining characteristics of the nation and its society.

Babler warns that the lessons from history and the state of global affairs remind us that freedom and democracy are not guaranteed. He insists on the continuous need to strengthen a robust rule of law, uphold human rights, respect for institutions, and foster a spirit of solidarity within the community. The party stands firmly against hate and extremism, promoting an open, equitable, and diverse society.

The SPÖ played a crucial role in the founding of the Second Republic, having been reestablished just two weeks prior on April 14, 1945. Babler underscores the party's historical significance in the Republic's creation and its ongoing responsibility to advocate for the nation and enhance the social welfare state. He affirms the party's dedication to improving the living conditions of citizens, enhancing the labor market, and ensuring affordable housing and quality healthcare. He concludes by asserting that secure employment and a strong social safety net are essential for a resilient Republic.
