Severe Weather Triggers 180 Emergency Responses in Upper Austria

Upper Austria experienced a severe weather event on Sunday evening and into Monday morning, characterized by intense rainfall that necessitated a rapid response from emergency services. Approximately 50 fire brigades, comprising around 900 personnel, were mobilized to handle a total of 180 emergency situations across the region.

The most affected areas included Oberwang and Unterach near Lake Attersee in the Vöcklabruck district, as well as Engerwitzdorf and Gallneukirchen in the Mühlviertel district. According to reports from the regional fire brigade command, the heavy downpour began around 7:45 PM in the Attersee area, subsequently moving into the Mühlviertel region.

In Engerwitzdorf, the volunteer fire department from Schweinbach alone managed 35 emergency calls from 9:45 PM into the early hours of the morning. The incidents primarily involved flooding, with entire streets, numerous basements, and living spaces being inundated with water and mud. In some cases, water levels reached up to the basement ceilings in several homes.

Additionally, at 11:15 PM, a flood alert was issued as the water level of the Große Gusen River surged at an alarming rate. Firefighters were engaged in various tasks, including dealing with flooded basements, clearing fallen trees, and managing mud-covered roads. The situation was particularly critical in the Vöcklabruck district, where the combination of heavy rainfall resulted in significant challenges for the emergency responders.

The local fire brigade command indicated that this incident marked the first major weather-related warning and significant storm event of the season, highlighting the need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of such extreme weather conditions.
