In 2024, Vienna experienced a staggering increase of nearly 30% in drug-related emergencies involving individuals under 18. Overall, the number of emergency responses due to drug overdoses rose by approximately 15% compared to the previous year, according to data provided by the city's Magistrate Department 70 (MA 70) in response to an inquiry by the Austrian Press Agency (APA). Mario Krammel, the chief physician of the professional rescue service, noted a consistent upward trend particularly among younger patients.
Specifically, the count of emergency calls for patients under 18 surged from 231 to 297. In contrast, adults saw an increase from 2,224 to 2,512, while instances involving individuals with unknown ages rose from 506 to 597 in 2024. The growth among adults was slightly below, and that of individuals whose ages were not disclosed was marginally above the overall trend in this category. In terms of medication-related intoxications, the total number of emergency responses reached 2,831, marking an increase of over 4%, although there was a decline of more than 7.5% in cases among those under 18.
Krammel highlighted that the predominant causes of drug-related emergencies involve opiates, often in combination with party drugs like Liquid Ecstasy, especially within the youth demographic. He emphasized that various types of mixed intoxications have become a concerning norm within emergency services, frequently posing life-threatening risks. He urged the public to call emergency services immediately if they suspect someone is experiencing a drug-related incident, as trained personnel provide guidance until help arrives. Common symptoms of concern include confusion, loss of consciousness, and respiratory issues.
Ewald Lochner, the coordinator for psychiatry, addiction, and drug issues in Vienna, remarked that calling for medical assistance in such emergencies should generally be viewed positively. However, he noted that the statistics do not provide insights into the actual number of individuals consuming drugs or their residency status, as often the residence of emergency patients is unknown. He pointed out that many young people lack awareness of the risks associated with drug use, and the psychosocial challenges they face are becoming increasingly complex. Furthermore, analyses indicate that the potency of the substances being consumed is on the rise.
While the overall drug consumption levels in Vienna remain relatively stable, there is a notable increase in riskier patterns of use, particularly concerning prescription medications. Lochner specifically mentioned benzodiazepines, which are frequently combined with other substances among teenagers. Following the tragic drug-related death of a 14-year-old in Vienna-Simmering in spring 2024, a task force focusing on benzodiazepines was established, and its findings are expected to enhance ongoing educational efforts and early intervention strategies.
