The retail industry is currently experiencing heightened dissatisfaction among its workforce regarding compensation levels, as collective bargaining discussions continue for approximately 450,000 employees in the sector. Recent findings from the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor's work climate index reveal that retail workers are notably less satisfied with their pay compared to employees in other industries. According to the data, only half of retail staff report satisfaction with their earnings, whereas the figure stands at 60 percent across other professions.
Following a period of low morale during the pandemic, overall job satisfaction began to recover in 2023 and 2024 in most sectors, including retail. However, this upward trend has recently diverged: while satisfaction stabilized in most industries, retail employees have experienced a decline in contentment, particularly concerning their income and perceived social status.
Industry analysts highlight that many retail workers report high levels of job satisfaction, but this is offset by persistent concerns over insufficient pay and limited social recognition. A significant proportion of employees express an interest in changing jobs or even leaving the profession altogether. Research indicates that more than a quarter of retail workers are considering a job switch, pointing to structural challenges within the sector.
Data from recent studies shed light on the prevalence of low-wage employment in the retail sector, particularly within food retail. Approximately 32 percent of sales staff in food retail fall into the low-income category, compared to 14 percent across all occupations. This disparity is further reflected in annual gross salaries: women working full-time in food retail earned an average of EUR34,178 in 2023, while their male counterparts received EUR38,781. Across all industries, full-time female employees earned EUR47,154 on average, and men earned EUR53,694, illustrating a considerable pay gap between retail and other sectors.
The food retail trade represents the largest segment within the retail industry, employing around 155,000 individuals, with women comprising 67 percent of the workforce. This demographic distribution underscores the significant impact of wage policies on female employment in retail.
Negotiations between employer and employee representatives have so far yielded little progress. In the most recent round of collective bargaining, employers proposed a 2.25 percent wage increase, while union representatives called for a 2.9 percent raise. The annual inflation rate, which serves as a reference point for these negotiations, currently stands at 3 percent, further exacerbating concerns over real wage development among retail employees.
As the sector approaches its busiest time of the year, wage dissatisfaction and the gap between employer and employee expectations remain pressing issues. The outcome of the ongoing negotiations is expected to play a crucial role in addressing persistent wage concerns and shaping the future of the retail workforce.
