For those earning over a certain income threshold, or working as self-employed or for the civil service, there is the option in Germany to opt for private health insurance instead of the more widely-used public health insurance. There are many reasons why an individual may choose private (PKV) over public (GKV) insurance and these are covered in the many articles The Germany Eye has contributed on the subject (see "Health Insurance Articles" to the right).
Do note that It is a legal requirement in Germany to possess health insurance. Whether that is private health insurance, or public health insurance, all citizens who reside in the country are legally obliged to insure themselves through an accredited German insurance company.
The Eye Newspapers has collated a current and uptodate list of private insurance providers, many of who are expatriate-friendly, in that they additionally specifically cater for English-language speakers.
