The inauguration of Pope Leo XIV is taking place today during a grand ceremony at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. The event has drawn representatives from around the globe, with 200 official delegations arriving to witness this significant moment in the Catholic Church.
Austria's delegation is being led by Chancellor Christian Stocker, who expressed that the new pontiff's inauguration comes with high expectations from the global community. Thousands of pilgrims have been gathering at St. Peter's Square since early morning. The first subway train at 5:30 AM saw a surge of worshippers heading to the venue. Many attendees are from the United States, proudly waving flags in support of their fellow countryman, Robert Francis Prevost, who has taken on the papal name Leo XIV.
A notable presence is also felt from Peru, the second home of the new pope, with numerous pilgrims making the journey to attend the mass. The ceremony is expected to welcome approximately 250,000 people, with large screens installed around the Vatican to broadcast the event to those unable to secure a spot in the square.
In light of the anticipated crowds, extensive security measures have been implemented, including the deployment of anti-terrorism units around the Vatican. The mass will see the new pope receive the traditional symbols of papal authority, including the Fisherman's Ring and the Petrine Pallium, a white woolen stole.
Chancellor Stocker highlighted the potential for Pope Leo XIV to bring a unique perspective to the papacy, especially in areas such as peace, justice, and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. He noted that the pontiff's early addresses indicate a focus on these pressing global issues.
Representatives from the Austrian Catholic Church, including Archbishop Franz Lackner and Bishop Wilhelm Krautwaschl, are also attending the ceremony. In a show of solidarity, church bells throughout Austria will ring for 15 minutes at the beginning of the inaugural mass at 10:00 AM. Notable political figures, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, are also expected to be in attendance.
Pope Leo XIV was elected as the 267th pope just last week, marking a new chapter in the Vatican's leadership.
