ÖBB Initiates Testing and Measurement Rides on Koralmbahn

Mon 7th Apr, 2025

In preparation for the upcoming launch of the Koralmbahn, which will connect Klagenfurt and Graz, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) is set to commence extensive testing on the new rail line. Starting from April 14, a series of measurement and test runs will take place eight months prior to the official opening of the route, scheduled for December 14.

The testing phase will cover a total of 15,000 kilometers across the Carinthia and Styria regions. Trains, including specially equipped measurement vehicles, will reach speeds of up to 250 km/h, ensuring the line meets all operational standards. Qualified and trained locomotive drivers will conduct these tests, which will also include training runs and the creation of video footage of the track.

These measurement runs will not be limited to the new section of the Koralmbahn; they will also be carried out on existing lines, necessitating temporary service interruptions. In total, there are 32 scheduled test days, concluding on June 12. To minimize disruption for students and commuters, many of these tests will occur on weekends and public holidays. Affected services include the S6 line in Styria, running between Werndorf, Hengsberg, and Wettmannstätten, as well as the S3 line in Carinthia, connecting Klagenfurt to St. Paul im Lavanttal. During periods of track closure, replacement bus services will be provided.

The Koralmbahn line spans 130 kilometers, with approximately 50 kilometers of it routed through tunnels. In addition to the extensive tunnel network, the route features over 100 bridges and includes 23 stations and stops. The most significant component of this infrastructure is the Koralmtunnel, which stretches 33 kilometers. Once operational, the Koralmbahn will significantly reduce travel time between Klagenfurt and Graz, allowing the journey to be completed in just 45 minutes.
