New Industrial Agreement Reached - 6.4 Percent Wage Increase

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

A new industrial agreement has been finalized following intense negotiations between the involved parties, with the announcement made early Tuesday morning. The agreement stipulates a wage increase of 3.4 percent for the first year and an additional 3 percent for the second year.

Per Hidesten, the CEO of the Employers' Association of Industry, expressed concerns about the financial implications of the new agreement. He noted that the high cost of the agreement could jeopardize the competitiveness of Swedish industry in the global market, especially in comparison with countries like Finland and Germany, where wage agreements were set at lower levels. He emphasized the deep concern among businesses while acknowledging their responsibility during these turbulent times.

On the other hand, the union IF Metall stated that the agreement provides favorable conditions for real wage increases and is positioned to set a standard for the Swedish labor market while simultaneously benefiting Sweden's competitive edge.

In addition to wage increases, discussions regarding reduced working hours played a significant role in the negotiations. Tomas Undin mentioned that there is mutual understanding between the parties on how to address this issue. Per Widolf, the Chief Negotiator for the Employers' Association of Industry, stated that any reductions in working hours will be accounted for within the overall cost framework agreed upon.

The parties have scheduled a press conference on Tuesday at 9:00 AM to discuss the implications of the agreement, which will remain in effect until March 31, 2027. Just a day prior, reports indicated that the union and employers were at an impasse, with the union previously rejecting a mediation proposal that suggested a 7.7 percent wage increase over three years.
