Changes to Appointment System for Hospital Outpatient Services Announced

Mon 14th Apr, 2025

The Health Councillor of Vienna has announced significant changes regarding how patients can make appointments at hospital outpatient services. Effective immediately, patients will now be required to schedule their appointments exclusively through the designated hotline, 1450. This decision aims to streamline the process and reduce congestion in hospital emergency departments.

According to recent statements, the approval of requests from part-time employed doctors seeking to work as private practitioners will no longer be granted. Full-time employed doctors, however, are permitted to engage in private practice if they choose to do so. Existing approvals for part-time doctors will remain valid, as they have already made financial investments based on those permissions.

In an interview, the Health Councillor emphasized the importance of implementing mandatory patient guidance measures to alleviate pressure on the outpatient services. He noted that this initiative aligns with the government's broader health program aimed at enhancing service delivery and accessibility for all patients.

Furthermore, the discussion touched on potential fees for outpatient services, a topic that has been met with mixed reactions from the public. The Health Councillor reiterated that the priority remains on improving patient care while also exploring options to ensure sustainable healthcare funding.

As changes unfold in the healthcare landscape, stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed and engage with the evolving policies that directly impact patient access to vital medical services.
