NEOS Calls on FPÖ Leader Kickl to Clarify Position on Austria's EU Membership

The Austrian political landscape is witnessing renewed debate over the country's future within the European Union following recent statements from the NEOS party. The party has raised concerns regarding the stance of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and its leader, Herbert Kickl, on Austria's commitment to the EU, particularly in light of international developments and growing discussions about potential EU withdrawal scenarios.

NEOS General Secretary and security spokesperson Douglas Hoyos highlighted apprehensions about the influence of authoritarian actors on both sides of the Atlantic, suggesting that their shared objective is to undermine European unity and stability. According to NEOS, the strategies of certain political figures in the United States and Russia, as well as their supporters in Europe, pose a risk to the continent's security and democratic values.

NEOS expressed particular concern over the lack of a clear response from the FPÖ regarding recent proposals for separating Austria from the European Union, which have reportedly received support from former US President Donald Trump. The party criticized the FPÖ for refraining from addressing these proposals, contrasting this silence with the party's usual vocal positions on other issues.

NEOS representatives argue that any moves toward an Austrian exit from the EU, sometimes referred to as 'Öxit,' could have significant repercussions for the country's economy and workforce. The party estimates that such a departure could jeopardize approximately 690,000 jobs and result in the loss of about 40 billion euros in economic output. These figures underline NEOS's belief in the economic and social benefits of continued EU membership.

In their statement, NEOS called on Herbert Kickl and the FPÖ to provide clear answers regarding their position on Austria's EU membership and to clarify whether the party intends to pursue a course that could lead to withdrawal. NEOS stressed the importance of transparency and public accountability, urging the FPÖ leadership to communicate their intentions to the Austrian public.

The party also referred to recent survey data indicating that a substantial majority of Austrians oppose any plans for the country to leave the European Union. According to NEOS, around 70% of respondents in recent polls have expressed support for remaining within the EU. The party emphasized that all other major Austrian political parties have reaffirmed their commitment to European integration and have rejected proposals for an EU exit.

NEOS further criticized what it described as contradictory behavior among certain political actors, who advocate for national sovereignty and neutrality while simultaneously aligning with external influences and remaining silent when Austria's interests are challenged.
