54 Migrants Rescued from Abandoned Oil Platform in the Mediterranean Sea

In a dramatic rescue operation, the NGO Open Arms successfully retrieved 54 individuals from an abandoned oil platform in the Mediterranean Sea. The group had departed from Libya five days earlier and found themselves stranded on the platform after their vessel capsized. Among the migrants were two newborns, one of whom was born on the platform during their ordeal, while another woman had recently given birth just days prior.

The rescue was carried out by the sailing ship 'Astral', which is operated by Open Arms. Currently, the vessel is en route to Lampedusa, where it is expected to arrive later today. The organization emphasized the critical nature of the operation, stating that without their intervention, the situation could have resulted in another tragedy at sea. They called for an urgent shift in migration policies that would prioritize the right to life and ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals.

In a related development, the Italian Coast Guard rescued 278 migrants off the coast of Calabria. The migrants were aboard two fishing boats that had been adrift for three days. The individuals, hailing from countries including Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Syria, and Sudan, were located by the Coast Guard near the town of Roccella Jonica after departing from Tobruk in Libya.

According to Italy's Interior Ministry, nearly 24,000 migrants have arrived in southern Italy via sea routes between January and early June 2025. This figure represents a notable increase compared to the same period last year, which saw approximately 21,784 arrivals. The ongoing situation highlights the persistent challenges faced by migrants seeking refuge across the Mediterranean, as well as the urgent need for effective and humane migration policies.
