Merz Calls for Collective Effort Towards New Unity on German Unity Day

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of German reunification, Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need for a united effort to address the current challenges facing the nation. French President Emmanuel Macron, who also attended the Unity Day celebrations, underscored the importance of Franco-German friendship and the defense of democracy in Europe. However, he cautioned that the specter of conflict is re-emerging, particularly in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the rise of hybrid threats, including cyberattacks and misinformation.

Macron called for a united European front, not only to defend against external threats but also to combat internal challenges to democracy. He warned against the erosion of the rule of law and the rise of divisive rhetoric fueled by social media. He advocated for the regulation of social networks dominated by major corporations to safeguard democratic discourse.
