Merkel raises concerns over underestimation of Russian threat in Germany

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has voiced his concerns that many Germans are not taking Russia's threat seriously enough, highlighting that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is just one part of a broader issue. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Merz emphasized that Russia is attempting to destabilize the entire political order of the European continent, a reality that he believes is underestimated not only in Germany but across Europe.

Merz pointed out that while Russia's actions in Ukraine often attract the most attention, their ambitions extend far beyond territorial gains in that country. He stated that the Russian leadership fears democracy, open societies, and the success of European integration efforts. According to Merz, these fears drive Russia to undermine such democratic successes, a threat that, in his view, is present every day.

Merz also addressed the support being given to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. He noted that since the beginning of last year, the United States has stopped providing financial assistance for weapons and equipment. This gap in aid has been filled mainly by a coalition of willing European and non-European nations. Merz remarked that this serves as proof that Europe can independently support Ukraine, although he acknowledged the significant financial strain this places on the involved countries' budgets. Nonetheless, he stressed the importance of continuing this support until the conflict ends.

Additionally, Chancellor Merz expressed the importance of convincing US President Donald Trump that a stable Europe and European Union are also beneficial for the United States. Merz has raised this point in meetings with Trump, arguing that a stable European partnership is in America's interest as well.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine are reportedly set to continue, with Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff traveling to Norway for a new round of negotiations. Sources have indicated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to participate in these discussions, although the schedule remains tentative and could change. The White House has so far not issued a comment on these developments.

These negotiations occur amidst growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv. Ukraine has accused the US government of slowing down its military satellite system, Starshield, limiting the exchange of intelligence information, and delaying the delivery of Patriot anti-aircraft missiles. President Zelenskyy, in a video message released on Monday, suggested that a political decision has seemingly been made to reduce support for Ukraine. In response, Trump accused Zelenskyy of refusing to engage in peace talks with Russia and suggested that the Ukrainian leader might benefit from appointing another negotiator.
