Jakob Schubert Misses Home World Cup Amid Olympic Uncertainties

The upcoming Climbing World Cup scheduled from June 23 to 29 in Innsbruck is set to proceed without two notable competitors, Olympic bronze medalists Jakob Schubert and Jessica Pilz. Schubert is currently battling a persistent capsule injury in his hand, sustained earlier this year in January, while Pilz is contending with a complicated finger injury.

During a press conference held in Innsbruck, Schubert expressed concerns about the duration of his injury, noting that it has proven to be more challenging than anticipated. His skepticism regarding participation in the imminent World Cup was evident as he mentioned recent setbacks in his recovery, keeping his options open for the event.

In contrast, Pilz appears less optimistic about her chances of competing. She revealed that she had not been able to train for two months, marking it as the longest training hiatus of her career. The decision on her participation is heavily dependent on her finger's condition, which she humorously referred to as the decisive factor.

Both athletes are now shifting their focus to the future, particularly regarding the upcoming Olympic Games. Pilz expressed relief that her injury did not occur prior to the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where she previously earned a bronze medal. The next few months are expected to be challenging as they work towards full recovery, especially with an eye towards the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Despite these difficulties, Pilz affirmed her determination to pursue qualification for the next Olympic Games. Schubert, however, conveyed a more cautious approach, indicating that he needs to assess his health and fitness before making any firm decisions about his Olympic participation.

Before the distant Olympic aspirations, the immediate focus is on the World Cup in Innsbruck. Heiko Wilhelm, the Sports Director of the Austrian Climbing Federation, emphasized the significance of this event, describing it as a platform for respect, camaraderie, and athletic challenge. Julia Pinggera, the event manager, noted that ticket sales have been strong, with only a few remaining.

Other athletes are looking forward to this prestigious event, with Para-climber Jasmin Plank highlighting its unique status as the season's first World Cup. Athletes Mattea Pötzi and Jan-Luca Posch also expressed excitement about competing on home turf, with Posch confidently stating his readiness and fitness for the competition.
