Massive Protests Erupt in Istanbul in Support of Detained Mayor Imamoglu

Thu 8th May, 2025

On Wednesday evening, tens of thousands of individuals gathered in Istanbul to express their solidarity with Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was arrested in March. The demonstration took place near Istanbul University, which had recently revoked Imamoglu's diploma shortly before his detention.

Özgür Özel, the leader of Imamoglu's party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), addressed the crowd, emphasizing the significance of their cause. He articulated that their struggle is fundamentally about democracy and freedom. Additionally, Özel highlighted the collective effort to restore Imamoglu's diploma, reinforcing the connection between the demonstration's location and the mayor's recent challenges.

Özel also announced that a petition advocating for Imamoglu's release and the immediate call for new elections has garnered over 14.8 million signatures, illustrating the widespread support for the detained mayor. Imamoglu is seen as a major political rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and his arrest has triggered some of the largest protests against Erdogan's government since the Gezi protests of 2013.

In recent weeks, participation in demonstrations supporting Imamoglu had waned, prompting the CHP to mobilize efforts to draw a larger crowd for this event. Imamoglu was taken into custody on March 19, following which a court ordered his detention under allegations of corruption--a claim that he vehemently denies. The situation has sparked significant unrest and has galvanized opposition against the ruling government, reflecting deep-seated political tensions in the country.

The protests highlight a growing discontent with the current political climate and the government's actions towards opposition figures. Many participants in the demonstration carried banners and chanted slogans calling for justice and democratic rights, showcasing a collective demand for change.

The atmosphere during the protest was charged, with many attendees expressing their determination to continue advocating for Imamoglu's release and the restoration of democratic processes in Turkey. As the political landscape evolves, the implications of Imamoglu's detention and the public's response could play a critical role in shaping future developments in Turkish politics.
