Hungary Shuts Down Nuclear Power Plant Amid Danube Crisis and Heatwave

Unprecedented heat and drought conditions in Central Europe have led to a significant drop in water levels in the Danube River, forcing Hungary to shut down its only nuclear power station, the Paks facility. The Danube, which serves as the main cooling source for Paks, has seen water levels fall dramatically due to ongoing extreme weather, threatening the facility's ability to operate safely.

The Paks Nuclear Power Plant is a crucial component of Hungary's energy infrastructure, typically supplying a substantial portion of the nation's electricity needs. However, with water from the Danube essential for cooling the reactors, the plant has faced a drastic reduction in output. Officials have confirmed that production fell to just 240 megawatts before the plant was scheduled to cease operations entirely, marking the first full shutdown in its 44-year history.

The situation comes as Hungary experiences soaring temperatures, with forecasts predicting highs near 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days. These conditions have intensified concerns over the country's power grid, as increased energy demand for cooling coincides with reduced supply from the nation's primary power source.

In response, the Hungarian government has called on businesses, public organizations, and households to reduce electricity use, especially during peak hours between 17:00 and 22:00. Authorities are also considering implementing mandatory electricity restrictions for large-scale consumers starting early next week.

The impact of the low Danube water levels extends beyond the energy sector. River navigation has been heavily disrupted, affecting cargo shipments and passenger traffic. The tourism industry, which relies on river cruises and water-related activities, has also seen a downturn. Additionally, water shortages have prompted authorities to introduce restrictions on water usage in over 100 towns and villages across Hungary, further highlighting the widespread effects of the drought.

The energy crisis has drawn the attention of neighboring countries. Slovakia, for instance, has indicated its willingness to support Hungary if necessary, as regional cooperation becomes increasingly important amid rising temperatures and strained resources.

The extreme weather has also exacerbated fire risk across Europe. In Greece, emergency services have been battling major wildfires on the island of Crete and near Athens, where around 100 homes have reportedly been destroyed. In France's Gironde region, a significant wildfire has recently been brought under control, but the threat of renewed outbreaks remains high due to persistent heat and dryness.

Experts point to climate change as a key driver of the extreme conditions affecting much of Europe. Recent studies indicate that rising global temperatures and shifting weather patterns are contributing to more frequent and intense droughts, lower river levels, and increased susceptibility to wildfires. The current situation in Hungary and neighboring countries underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address energy security, water management, and climate resilience across the region.
