German prosecutors seize recordings from Zeit newsroom in investigation

The Hamburg public prosecutor's office has seized audio recordings related to interviews conducted by the Zeit newsroom for its podcast "House of Block." The action is part of investigations into the entrepreneur Christina Block, sparking a legal challenge by the media outlet, which argues that the move threatens press freedom.

The Hamburg Regional Court had ordered the search of a Zeit journalist’s home and newsroom to obtain recordings of interviews with members of the Block family. These conversations took place shortly after the family's children were returned to their father in Denmark following an alleged abduction around New Year’s Eve 2023. The recordings have been described as potentially crucial evidence because they were made soon after the incident.

The Zeit journalist involved reportedly complied by handing over the recordings before a search could be conducted. The recordings were handed over sealed, with Zeit objecting to their seizure by citing the special protections afforded to press organizations. Zeit's editors-in-chief, Giovanni di Lorenzo and Jochen Wegner, stressed the importance of source protection, stating that it is critical for independent journalism. They vowed to fight the case through all available legal channels.

The court argued that the seizure of the interview material is necessary to verify the credibility of witnesses involved in the case. Although Zeit is not accused of any wrongdoing, the recordings with the children and their father were considered potentially significant evidence.

Journalistic associations have voiced strong criticism of the authorities’ actions, especially given that the seizure coincided with Hamburg's Week of Press Freedom. Mika Beuster, the federal chairman of the German Journalists Association (DJV), raised concerns about the protection of journalistic work, arguing that interviews should not be easily converted into tools for criminal investigations. Reporters Without Borders also condemned the seizure, with its director Christian Mihr describing it as a serious assault on press freedom.

This development comes amid broader legal proceedings connected to the Block case in Hamburg, which has seen further law enforcement activity. Separate reports mention the arrest of a former chief of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) related to discoveries made during searches linked to the Block investigation.
