August Hanning, the former head of Germany's foreign intelligence agency, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), has been placed in pre-trial detention following his arrest on suspicion of espionage. The Federal Court of Justice's investigating judge enforced the arrest warrant, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Prosecutor's office.

The 80-year-old is accused of having purchased sensitive BND information from his former chief of staff, Manfred D., and allegedly distributing some of this intelligence after his retirement from the BND. The prosecutor's office accuses Hanning of acts related to intelligence agency activities, treason by spying on state secrets, and attempted treason.

The allegations have caused considerable concern, as voiced by Henrichmann, the chairman of the Parliamentary Control Committee, in media interviews. Hanning is alleged to have utilized classified information to prepare an analysis for a foreign intelligence service member, though it remains uncertain if this analysis reached its intended recipient. The specific foreign country in question has not been disclosed.

Media reports have suggested that the espionage activities may involve Azerbaijan, although the government of Azerbaijan has denied these accusations. They have dismissed the claims as misinformation intended to damage relations between Germany and Azerbaijan.

Hanning's former chief of staff, Manfred D., has been in custody for his involvement in the alleged activities, facing charges of aiding attempted treason and espionage. Law enforcement officers arrested both Hanning and Manfred D. on Tuesday, with Hanning being taken into custody in North Rhine-Westphalia and his associate in Bavaria.

August Hanning led the BND from December 1998 until the end of November 2005. It is alleged that a few years after his departure from the agency, he arranged with Manfred D. to acquire valuable intelligence insights from the BND. These insights reportedly bolstered his consulting work and were allegedly shared for profit.

The case continues to unfold, as authorities seek to determine the full scope of Hanning's alleged activities and the potential impact on national security. Investigators are delving into the extent of the breaches and any additional entities or countries that might have been involved in the intelligence exchanges.
