Corona incidence suddenly jumps - RKI reports worrying figures for Germany

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported Wednesday a 7-day incidence of 80.4, up from 75.1 the previous day and 65.4 a week ago (previous month: 71.0). The incidence has thus increased in Germany for the seventh day in a row.

Compared to the previous week, the number of new coronavirus infections has also increased significantly: 17,015 corona cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours. A week ago, there were 5,112 fewer positive Corona tests, 11,903. According to the RKI, another 92 deaths have also been recorded. A week ago, there had also been 92 deaths.

The number of corona patients admitted to hospitals per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days - the most important parameter for a possible tightening of corona restrictions - was given by the RKI on Tuesday at 2.13 (Monday 1.92). A nationwide threshold for when the situation becomes critical is not provided for hospitalization incidence, in part because of wide regional variations. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

End corona emergency

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn plans to phase out the Corona emergency in Germany in November. The continuation of the epidemic situation had last been approved by the Bundestag in August for three more months. Spahn's move has met with a divided response. The epidemic situation is the basis for regulations and central Corona measures in Germany. It was first established by the Bundestag in March 2020 and later extended several times by parliament.

Spahn had spoken out on Monday during consultations with the health ministers of the states that there will not be a renewed extension. This would mean that the nationwide Corona emergency would expire on November 25.
