Water Levels in Many Austrian Lakes Continue to Fall Amid Persistent Drought

The ongoing heat and prolonged dry weather across Austria in recent weeks have led to a notable decrease in the water levels of numerous lakes throughout the country. Measurements show that several well-known bodies of water are experiencing historically low levels, raising concerns about environmental impacts and recreational activities.

Record Lows Observed in Major Lakes

The water level of Lake Constance, a significant transnational lake bordering Austria, has reached its lowest point ever recorded for early August since monitoring commenced in 1864. The current level is significantly below the long-term average, with a drop of over a meter compared to previous years. Similarly, at Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, the water level stands only slightly above the lowest point measured since 1965, with the situation attributed to consistent dry conditions. The lake remains accessible for boating and swimming, and aquatic life is not yet critically affected, though the situation is closely monitored.

In the province of Salzburg, Lake Wolfgang has fallen to its lowest level in three decades, already impacting excursion boat operations. Other lakes in the region, such as Lake Zell, are also reporting reduced water levels, especially in the Alpine foothills where precipitation has been scarce.

Regional Variations and Contributing Factors

Carinthia's major lakes, with the exception of a few that are artificially regulated, are also experiencing persistent low water levels. The Weissensee and Wörthersee benefit from regulation, resulting in only minor fluctuations, but unregulated lakes like Lake Ossiach near Villach remain well below typical summer levels. However, these values are not yet considered historically low compared to some previous years.

In the St. Veit an der Glan district, the Längsee has been below its 30-year minimum for several weeks. Across Carinthia, a rainfall deficit of approximately 24 percent since the start of the year has been reported, most notably affecting river flows such as the Lavant in the east of the region.

Styria presents a different challenge due to limited long-term data on lake levels. While recent measurements are available for the region's two largest lakes, the lack of historical comparison makes it difficult to determine if current levels are unprecedented. Nonetheless, low river levels have led to reduced output from small hydroelectric power stations, exacerbated by weak snowfall during the previous winter.

In Lower Austria, the Lunzer See's water level is reported to be under the average, while in Upper Austria, lakes like Traunsee and Hallstätter See are currently showing slight increases due to glacial melt, though this is attributed to accelerated glacier loss. Conversely, Attersee and Mondsee, which rely on inflow from streams, are experiencing some of their lowest water levels on record for the summer months. Lake Nussensee has dropped by five meters, exposing World War II-era ordnance and resulting in temporary closures.

National Overview: Hydrological Situation Remains Critical

The most recent national water resources report indicates that July was both warmer and drier than average, with temperatures exceeding the long-term norm by 2.0 degrees Celsius and precipitation levels at just 47 percent of what is typical. These conditions have intensified hydrological stress, with 95 percent of river monitoring sites showing below-average flow rates and 90 percent recording particularly low readings. Almost 90 percent of groundwater stations also reported low or very low levels by the end of July, a marked increase from the previous month.

While sporadic local thunderstorms have temporarily raised water levels in some areas, the overall trend remains one of decline. The situation is especially pronounced in regions like Tyrol, where the number of monitoring points with critically low groundwater levels has risen sharply. Experts note that a sustained recovery of lake and river levels would require significantly more rainfall than currently forecasted.

Environmental and Economic Implications

Persistently low water levels affect not only recreational activities such as boating and swimming but also disrupt aquatic ecosystems and local economies dependent on tourism and hydroelectric power. Additionally, the combination of heat, reduced precipitation, and lower river flows poses challenges for maintaining healthy water quality and sustaining biodiversity.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, awaiting potential relief from forecasted temperature drops and hoping for substantial rainfall to alleviate the water deficit in Austria's lakes and rivers.
