No Egg Supply Crisis Anticipated in Austria Amid Rising Demand

As Easter approaches, some retailers in Austria may experience a temporary reduction in egg supply. However, Rosemarie Ferstl, Vice President of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Agriculture, reassures that the country will not face an egg shortage similar to that seen recently in the United States. She explained that the outbreak of avian influenza last autumn has not led to a severe crisis in Austria, as hens are primarily raised on family farms rather than in large agricultural corporations.

In Austria, there are currently 2,492 egg-laying hen farms scattered across the country. According to Gerold Sterrer, Chairman of the Poultry Industry in Upper Austria, localized outbreaks of disease will not cause significant disruptions in supply as they would if a large agribusiness were affected. However, he does predict a gradual decline in egg availability due to a combination of factors. Over the past five years, egg consumption has increased, with the per capita consumption reaching 248 eggs annually. Meanwhile, rising construction costs, higher interest rates, and economic uncertainties have kept the hen population in Upper Austria relatively stable.

Additionally, there has been no proper adjustment in egg prices to reflect the increased production costs. Sterrer noted that a price increase of 2 cents per egg would be a reasonable goal for farmers to cover these rising expenses. In 2024, the most common farming method in Austria was barn housing, which accounted for over 56% of all egg production. Free-range systems made up nearly 31%, while organic free-range farming represented 13%.

Despite concerns about potential shortages as Easter approaches, experts remain optimistic about the egg supply in Austria. The diverse nature of the poultry farming landscape, characterized by smaller family-run farms, provides a buffer against the kind of widespread shortages that can occur in larger, centralized operations. Consumers can expect to find eggs available in stores, although some localized supply issues may arise.

As the situation unfolds, it is essential for consumers to stay informed about the state of egg production in Austria and to be aware of the broader economic factors that may influence supply and pricing in the coming months. The agricultural sector is adapting to changing conditions, and while challenges remain, the resilience of local farming practices is likely to mitigate any severe impacts on egg availability.
