Support Rally for Joakim Medin Canceled

The planned support rally for Swedish journalist Joakim Medin has been canceled, as confirmed by one of the organizing groups, Reporters Without Borders. The organization announced via social media that they will provide further updates in the future.

Katarina Carlsson, the organization's secretary, noted that the timing for the rally was not ideal. She emphasized that while the cancellation is regrettable, it is not a significant issue, stating that sometimes events do not align as hoped.

Kerstin Almegård, president of Swedish PEN, another group involved in the organization, refrained from making further comments at this moment. However, she expressed in a message that many are advocating for Medin's release and hope for his return home as soon as possible.

Joakim Medin was detained on March 27 in Turkey. He faces allegations of insulting President Erdogan and being affiliated with a terrorist organization--charges that are reportedly unfounded. The situation has garnered attention from various human rights organizations and media outlets.

The Swedish Consulate has reportedly met with Medin to discuss his circumstances. His wife has publicly stated her belief that journalists should be able to work without the fear of imprisonment. Medin's initial communication from prison highlighted that journalism should not be considered a crime.
