Semperoper Dresden Unveils Diverse Opera and Ballet Season
The Semperoper Dresden has announced its new season, featuring a dynamic mix of internationally renowned works and fresh interpretations. Under the artistic leadership of Nora Schmid, the opera house aims to deliver a program that merges global appeal with artistic substance.
The season commences with Verdi's adaptation of Shakespeare's classic, "Falstaff," marking the debut of Chief Conductor Daniele Gatti at the Dresden opera podium. Baritone Nicola Alaimo takes on the lead role, bringing to life the complexities of the aging bon vivant Falstaff. This opening production sets the tone for a season focused on both tradition and innovation.
In contrast to the comedic energy of the season opener, Francis Poulenc's "Dialogues des Carmélites" provides a powerful exploration of faith, fear of death, and courage under political oppression. Notable performances in this opera include Evelyn Herlitzius and Marjukka Tepponen, with musical direction by Marie Jacquot, further enriching the season's artistic depth.
The schedule continues with Wagner's "Parsifal," a seminal work celebrated for its spiritual and musical gravitas. Tenor Eric Cutler assumes the title role, performing under Gatti's baton for the second time this season. This production underscores the Semperoper's commitment to presenting cornerstone works of the operatic repertoire.
The program also highlights Bizet's "Carmen," reimagined with Ève-Maud Hubeaux in the lead, offering a new perspective on the iconic character. Additionally, Hans Abrahamsen's "The Snow Queen" features Georg Zeppenfeld as the enigmatic Snow Queen, while Nino Rota's "The Florentine Hat" brings a comedic touch, with Rosalia Cid and tenor Piotr Buszewski in prominent roles.
Beyond these major productions, the season includes performances of Nino Rota's renowned film scores and notable role debuts such as Camilla Nylund as "Turandot," Christa Mayer in "The Love for Three Oranges," Elbenita Kajtazi as Mimì in "La Bohème," and the celebrated pairing of Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak in "Tosca."
The Semperoper Ballet, led by Kinsun Chan, continues to showcase its international orientation and curiosity. This year, acclaimed choreographer Stephanie Lake joins as Artist in Residence. The ballet repertoire features classics like "Swan Lake," "The Nutcracker," "Nijinsky," and "Sleeping Beauty," as well as Chan's own choreography, "Parts and Pieces." New works by Stephanie Lake, Akram Khan, and John Cranko will also be presented on the Semperoper stage for the first time.
The Semperoper itself stands as a symbol of Dresden's architectural, historical, and artistic heritage. Originally designed by Gottfried Semper and reconstructed after World War II, the opera house has reestablished itself as a world-class venue for opera, ballet, and concert performances since its reopening in 1985.
Tickets for the upcoming season's events are available at the Schinkelwache on Theaterplatz and through the opera house's official online ticket shop, which offers a 3D seat map for reservations. The detailed season schedule, digital brochures, and the Semperoper Magazine provide additional insights and background information on the 2025/26 program. Audiences can also subscribe to the Semperoper newsletter for regular updates.
The Semperoper Dresden will also participate as an exhibitor at the "Presse"-SCHAU event in Vienna's Marx Halle from November 7 to 9, 2025, further strengthening its presence in the international cultural landscape.
