Cancellation of 2025 Christmas Market at Maria-Theresien-Platz Met with Regret by NHM and KHM Museums Association

On April 16, 2025, the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (Natural History Museum Vienna) and the KHM-Museumsverband (Art History Museum Association) expressed their disappointment regarding the cancellation of the Christmas market scheduled for 2025 at Maria-Theresien-Platz. This annual event has been a beloved occasion for many, serving as a significant attraction that not only brings joy to visitors but also promotes both cultural institutions.

The Christmas market has traditionally fostered a connection between the public and the museums, encouraging attendees to explore the festive market and subsequently visit the nearby museum exhibits. The cancellation is seen as a loss for the community, which looks forward to enjoying the seasonal festivities in a picturesque setting.

Both the KHM-Museumsverband and the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien announced that construction work for a barrier-free entrance will not commence until the autumn of 2026. Therefore, they believe that this year's Christmas market could have proceeded unaffected. The decision to cancel the event has sparked discussions about the importance of such cultural gatherings, particularly in enhancing community engagement and supporting local tourism.

In light of the cancellation, the museums are keen to reiterate their commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that future events can cater to all visitors. The organizations aim to transform the area into a welcoming space that not only meets the needs of patrons but also elevates the cultural experience associated with visiting the museums.
