Rail Transformation in Carinthia and Styria Set to Launch December 14
Beginning December 14, a significant overhaul of train services in Carinthia and Styria will be implemented, offering enhanced connectivity and reduced travel times. The new Railjet Express service is expected to make the journey from Graz to Klagenfurt in just 41 minutes, traversing the Koralmbahn's Koralmtunnel. Additionally, travelers will be able to reach Klagenfurt from Vienna in approximately three hours and ten minutes, making train travel a more appealing alternative to driving.
According to transportation officials, the Interregio service will expand long-distance travel options by 30%, providing a train from Vienna to Graz every 30 minutes--up from the previous 18 services per day. Similarly, the frequency of services from Graz to Klagenfurt will increase to 29 daily trains, compared to just eight previously offered by bus. This expansion creates what is being described as the most extensive timetable in southern Austria.
The improvements also involve an upgrade of the Tauernbahn line, which will now feature an hourly service connecting Villach and Salzburg for the first time. This connection will link Graz directly with Salzburg via Carinthia, enhancing both regional and international travel opportunities.
Moreover, Graz will gain direct rail access to Italy, with destinations such as Venice and Trieste becoming easily reachable within a reasonable timeframe. The introduction of two new Nightjet services from Graz to Rome and Milan will further facilitate travel between these major cities.
