Police Pursue Drug-Impaired Driver for 25 Kilometres in Amstetten District
Over the weekend, law enforcement authorities in Lower Austria intervened in several cases of reckless driving, culminating in a lengthy pursuit involving a drug-impaired motorist in the Amstetten district. The incident unfolded on the West Motorway (A1) as a 21-year-old woman, originally from Vienna, was observed overtaking both a police unmarked vehicle and multiple other cars on the right-hand side, a maneuver prohibited by traffic regulations.
Officers initiated a pursuit when the suspect continued her hazardous driving behavior, overtaking vehicles illegally on eight separate occasions and failing to maintain adequate distance from other road users twice during the chase. The pursuit, which was recorded on police video equipment, extended for approximately 25 kilometers due to the combined factors of dense traffic and the driver's increasingly erratic actions. Speed checks during the incident indicated that the vehicle was traveling at 190 km/h in a zone where 130 km/h is the maximum permitted speed.
The chase concluded only after officers managed to safely stop the suspect's car at the Haag exit. Following her apprehension, medical authorities conducted an evaluation, determining that the woman was unfit to drive, in part due to the influence of narcotics. Consequently, her driving license was revoked on a provisional basis, and she was prohibited from continuing her journey. The case has been forwarded to the district administrative authority in Amstetten for further legal proceedings.
In a separate incident, a 19-year-old male driver from the Gänserndorf district was detected exceeding the speed limit significantly while operating a high-performance vehicle with 450 horsepower. The driver, who possessed a probationary license, had rented the powerful car specifically for weekend use. He was recorded driving at 161 km/h in an area with a posted limit of 100 km/h along the B3 in Groß-Enzersdorf. Authorities immediately confiscated his probationary license and initiated administrative procedures with the local district office.
Additionally, police reported a case involving a Romanian national residing in the Tulln district, who was intercepted riding a motorcycle at 141 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. The incident occurred on the Landesstraße 120 in St. Andrä-Wördern. Law enforcement seized the motorcycle and temporarily revoked the rider's license, also referring the matter to the relevant administrative authority.
These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by traffic enforcement officials in addressing dangerous driving behaviors, particularly those involving excessive speed and impaired driving. The police emphasize the risks associated with such actions, noting the potential for severe accidents and legal consequences. Investigations and administrative proceedings in all three cases are ongoing, with further sanctions expected based on the outcomes of the respective inquiries.
