oekostrom AG Launches Innovative Agri-Photovoltaic Plant in Burgkirchen, Upper Austria
In Burgkirchen, located in the Braunau district of Upper Austria, a new chapter in sustainable energy production begins with the launch of an innovative agri-photovoltaic (Agri-PV) installation by oekostrom AG. The project aims to harmonize solar power generation with ongoing agricultural activity, highlighting the potential for combined land usage in the context of Austria's energy transition.
The newly initiated facility is designed to deliver a peak solar output of 2.04 megawatts (MWp), an amount sufficient to provide clean electricity to approximately 600 households annually. The plant is expected to generate about 1.97 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity each year, contributing to the reduction of around 400 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. This dual-use approach enables sheep to graze under the solar panels, promoting ecological land management and supporting local agricultural practices alongside renewable energy generation.
This development is the result of close collaboration between oekostrom AG, the municipality of Burgkirchen, landowner Roland Piehringer, and various regional business partners. The project's construction phase is scheduled from October 2025 to April 2026, with the goal of integrating the facility into the local grid shortly thereafter.
The Agri-PV plant in Burgkirchen demonstrates a practical model for linking agricultural productivity with the drive for climate-neutral energy. By enabling the coexistence of livestock farming and solar technology, the initiative showcases how local communities can benefit from sustainable infrastructure. The project is also seen as a means to stimulate the regional economy, provide new business opportunities, and reinforce the municipality's commitment to environmental stewardship.
The partnership between public authorities, private stakeholders, and technical experts has been fundamental to the success of this endeavor. Community support and the involvement of regional companies have been essential in ensuring the project meets both energy and land-use objectives. This integrated approach fosters local value creation and contributes to both energy security and environmental sustainability in Upper Austria.
From a policy perspective, the expansion of photovoltaic technology is a strategic objective for the region. Upper Austria recognizes the importance of independent and renewable energy supplies for maintaining its economic strength and long-term ecological balance. The Burgkirchen Agri-PV project is intended to set a precedent for future renewable energy developments across the state, underlining the feasibility of regional energy transition initiatives powered by collaborative innovation and responsible land management.
At the official groundbreaking ceremony, representatives from local and regional government, project partners, and members of the community gathered to mark the commencement of construction. The event underscored the shared commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and highlighted the role of Agri-PV in reaching climate neutrality goals.
oekostrom AG, established in 1999, has been a leader in Austria's renewable energy sector for over 25 years. Originating from climate protection and anti-nuclear movements, the company now supplies 100% green electricity sourced from wind, solar, and hydroelectric systems. With a broad shareholder base and a focus on transparent, fair energy provision, oekostrom AG continues to drive innovation in the country's energy landscape.
The Burgkirchen Agri-PV installation stands as a significant step forward in integrating sustainable power generation with agricultural preservation. As the project progresses, it is expected to serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives, furthering Austria's objectives for energy independence and climate action.
