New Green Space Unveiled for Students and Community in Rahlgasse

In Mariahilf, the Rahlgasse area has welcomed a new green parklet designed specifically for students, teachers, and local residents. This initiative was celebrated on a recent Friday, marking the opening of the space in front of the local gymnasium.

The parklet was created through the efforts of the Wiener Klimateam, allowing for a much-desired area that promotes reduced traffic, increased greenery, and more social space for those attending the school. According to city officials, the project is a successful collaborative effort that enhances community quality of life and contributes positively to the local climate.

The initiative, titled "Rahlgasse NEU: Green Living Oasis for Young and Old - Take a Break!", emerged from various proposals submitted by community members as part of the Wiener Klimateam. In late 2023, a randomly selected citizens' jury chose this project among seven others for implementation. Over the past year, the project was developed in cooperation with the City of Vienna's environmental protection department, local organizations, and students.

The newly established parklet has expanded the public area in front of the school, incorporating seating and diverse plantings aimed at creating a consumption-free meeting point for both students and residents. The local district leader expressed optimism about the parklet, highlighting its role in fostering environmental awareness and promoting community engagement, serving as a model for positive change.

Additionally, future plans for the Rahlgasse area include the installation of district heating pipes in 2027-28, which will further enhance the space for community members and students.

Students participated in creative workshops to conceptualize the new "schoolyard parklet", which was realized during the spring break. The structure, named GUSTAV, integrates the goals of urban transformation, emphasizing quality of life, community involvement, and climate protection. Vertical plants will provide shade, with opportunities to add more planting features as needed.

A community information evening was held during the planning phase to engage residents and local businesses in the renovation project.

The parklet exemplifies what can be achieved when the community collaborates effectively, showcasing the dedication of students and local residents in shaping their environment. This initiative has fostered a space for collective action and successful dialogue between citizens, professionals, and the City of Vienna.

The opening celebration on April 25 featured various activities, including bubble-making stations and balance games, which encouraged participation from students and passersby alike.
